Plot Of Renfield
In the 1897 novel, Renfield, a mental patient who devours insects and rats to steal their life forces and become immortal. He’s been placed in a mental institution. He pledges to give Dracula immortality if he helps him carry out his orders. The film will explore how that arrangement transformed over time into a poisonous, co-dependent relationship. Taika Waititi’s vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows reportedly influenced the approach of this film, which will approach these subjects from a humorous perspective.
While there have been various adaptations of Renfield’s position in life since the original novel, this is one of the earliest. Renfield is willing to relinquish his role as Dracula’s sidekick in exchange for the help of a new ally, Rebecca Quincy. This version is set in modern times and does not seem to be a period piece, unlike previous versions.
As he did in What We Do in the Shadows and other current works like Reginald the Vampire, Renfield modernizes century-old existing vampire stereotypes for a new audience. If the idea works, we may anticipate more contemporary versions of traditional villains. At this time, all we can do is wait for more information to emerge to see if the new take lives up to our expectations.
A mental patient and Dracula’s lackey. R.M. is a popular character in the video game series When Renfield (Nicholas Hoult) falls in love with a feisty but perennially aggressive traffic officer called Rebecca Quincy (Awkwafina), he decides to leave his centuries-long line of work as a henchman and pursue a new lease on life in contemporary New Orleans.

Production & Development
In July 2014, Universal Pictures announced that it will relaunch the “Classic Monsters” franchise and its brands as part of a shared universe developed by Alex Kurtzman and Chris Morgan. After Dracula Untold (2014) had a poor reception, The Mummy (2017) was re-positioned as the first film in the series. It wasn’t clear how closely it connected to the shared world. The Mummy, a financial and critical failure, prompted Universal to shift its focus away from the shared universe concept and toward individual stories.
Renfield was created as an original concept by comic book writer Robert Kirkman. Ryan Ridley penned the script, which is based on Robert Kirkman’s initial concept for Renfield. In November of 2019, Universal and Skybound Entertainment announced Dexter Fletcher as the film’s director. Similar to Taika Waititi’s vampire mockumentary What We Do in the Shadows, which centered on Renfield, the film was promoted as a humorous take on Count Dracula’s narrative.
In 2020, Leigh Whannell’s The Invisible Man, a Universal monster universe film, received commercial and critical success. Chris McKay began talks to helm the film when Fletcher departed to develop a remake of The Saint for Paramount Pictures in April 2021. “Something the studio was seeking for more of,” McKay said, who was hired because he provided a winning pitch combining the plot’s mix of humor and action.
